Youth-Scholarship

Our church currently has available five scholarships of $500 each to be awarded to our members pursuing undergraduate, graduate or post-graduate studies. The awards are made available through the St. Demetrios Educational Fund. The fund was established to recognize scholastic achievement and commitment to one’s faith among the youth of our parish and others who have been accepted to institutions of higher learning. The awards are intended to aid in the cost of tuition and will be sent directly to the recipient’s institution of higher learning.

Applications are being accepted now for scholarship awards for the 2008-2009 school year. In addition to the website applications are available in the church office.

Completed applications must be received at the church office by Monday, June 16, 2008 . Who is Eligible?

Eligible applicants must:

1) Be a participating steward of St. Demetrios or have an immediate family member who has been a participating steward for at least one year to date. Immediate family is limited to father, mother, sister, brother or guardian.

2) Have graduated from an accredited high school and be admitted to or be attending an institution of higher learning. Entering freshmen will be given priority by the scholarship committee. However, college sophomores, juniors, and seniors as well as graduate students are also eligible for scholarships and should not hesitate to apply. In making awards, those who have not previously received a St. Demetrios Educational Award will be given priority. Previous winners are also eligible, however, and will be fairly evaluated.

How will applicants be selected?

The St. Demetrios scholarship committee will review all submitted applications and select the award recipients. (Any committee member who is related to an applicant will not participate in the selection process.) Applications will be evaluated on the following criteria:

1) Scholarship (grade point average, honors classes, extracurricular activities, difficulty of academic program).

2) Service to St. Demetrios

3) The essay

4) Need

5) Letter of recommendation

Notification of an Award

Recipients of a St. Demetrios Educational Fund Award will be notified by the end of June. At that time, the committee will send the award check to the recipient’s college/university in care of the registrar. An accompanying letter will explain the award and its application toward the recipient’s tuition.
